In most of his appearances, Yan Liang acts as one of Yuan Shao's prominent generals. Usually, he, along with Wen Chou, have powered-up statistics compared to normal generics. Yan Liang also acts as Yuan Shao's bodyguard, and whenever he is defeated, his commander questions who defeated Yan Liang. Yuan Shao's confidence in Yan Liang and Wen Chou is also expressed at Hu Lao Gate or Si Shui Gate in some games. Yuan Shao will show his frustration within the fact that no one is brave enough to challenge either Lu Bu or Hua Xiong by stating, "If only Yan Liang or Wen Chou were here!" If Yan Liang is defeated at Guan Du, either a cutscene or dialogue, depending on the game, will show Yan Liang being defeated, and/or Wen Chou screaming to avenge his comrade's death.

He is playable in Dynasty Warriors 3 Fanon under the Yuan Faction.
